Why Is Oral Health Important?

Digestion starts in the mouth. What ever is in your mouth goes to your stomach and guts.

So, if there is an abundance of bad bacteria in your mouth it will eventually make its way to your stomach and intestines.

What happens when too much bad bacteria is in your mouth and intestines?

Well, health issues start popping up.

What are some of the signs/conditions of imbalance of the oral microbiome bacteria?

  • Bad Breath
  • Sensitive Teeth
  • Film on Teeth in the morning
  • Gums Receding
  • Bleeding Gums
  • Ulcers of the Mouth
  • White Coated Tongue
  • Cavities/Tooth decay
  • Root Canal Infections
  • Respiratory Infections
  • Diabetes
  • Certain Cancers
  • Alzheimer’s Disease

1000’s of studies have linked oral diseases to other health issues:

  • Diabetes
  • Leukemia
  • Fungal/bacteria infections

Good bacteria helps:

  • Breaks down Food
  • Remineralizers our teeth
  • Carries oxygen to our gums/soft tissue
  • Fights Infections
  • Helps prevent Oxidative stress
  • and Inflammation

Factors that kill or cause an imbalance of our healthy bacteria:

  • Mouth Wash/Anti-Bacterial or alcohol
  • 180,000,000 Americans use Mouth Wash
  • 5/6 Americans use antibiotics- they kill all of the bacteria
  • Kills our oral microbiome/healthy bacteria on the tongue crypt

What can we do to improve our Oral Health?

  • Avoid things that may eliminate beneficial bacteria
  • Example: Toothpaste with Triclosan, Sodium laved, Sulfate Sodium,
  • Artificial Sweeteners-Saccharin, Aspartame, Erythritol
  • Avoid products that use micro beads-toothpaste products

What can we do, stop brushing our teeth and using mouth wash? Please do not.

However, there is a Good News! There is a good for you Oral Care. It actually helps your mouth health. Remember that we said at the beginning of this that your digestion starts in your mouth. So, if your mouth is healthy, good bacteria will be passing down to your stomach and intestines.
